Oswald Sallaberger is an Austrian conductor and violinist.

He grew up in Innsbruck and studied first flute, but soon changed to violin. At the age of 15 he moved to Salzburg in order to play with the Austrian youth orchestra there.

He studied violin at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Thomas Zehetmair and Sandor Végh, and conducting with Michael Gielen. As assistant of Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez he gathered additional experience. At the age of 20 he toured the USA as chief conductor of the Austrian chamber orchestra.

In 1993, 1995 and 1999 he was invited to the Salzburg Festival where he conducted works by Mozart and George Lopez. Among the orchestras he conducted are the Orchestre National de France, the Symphony orchestras of the Südwestfunk, the Süddeutschen and the Saarland Radio, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, the Vlaams Radio Orkest, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestras of Graz and Weimar, the Orchestre Nationale de Lyon, the Ensemble modern und the ensemble intercontemporain.

Since 1998 he has been chief conductor of the Operá de Rouen. Here he conducted operas such as Strawinsky's “Nachtigall”, Guo Wenjing’s chamber opera “Langzi cun”, “Dido and Aeneas” by Henry Purcell und Ravel’s lyric fantasy “L'Enfant et les sortilèges”, Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”, “Der Fliegende Holländer” and “Tristan”, Verdi’s “La forza del destino”, “La Traviata”, “Rigoletto” and “Giovanna d’Arco”, Puccini’s “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly”, Strauss’ “Elektra” as well as all great operas by Mozart.
